Ear To The Ground: November Picks

As we come to the end of 2023, this will be our last monthly ETTG feature before we provide an end of the year run down of our favourite tracks. What a year it has been and November keeps up the standard with these top class offerings……..

PHILLIPA – LATENT MAGIC EP (FREERANGE RECORDS)

Berlin based Phillipa knocks it out of the park with her second release on Freerange. The New Zealand born DJ and producer is fast becoming one of the most credible female artists coming up in the deep house scene and ‘Latent Magic’ is testament to that fact. You’ll want to check the tasty opener ‘Hold’ with its rousing strings and vocoder touches. Title cut ‘Latent Magic’ is hopeful and uplifting and feels like it should be played in a cathedral.  Rounding off, ‘There It is’, is a head bobbing roller rich in live drums, orchestral strings, and a baseline that carries it all the way home.

CODY CURRIE – CODY CURRIE EP (RAZOR-N-TAPE)

Razor-N-Tape host Cody Curries latest maxi EP with a host of talent who amp things up even further on this ever so classy collection of cuts. Stee Downes of Lovebirds ‘I Want You In My Soul’ fame brings back the outernational vibes of his hallowed classic to Cody’s release, Marlena Dae’s stunningly soulful vocal performance on ‘Hold On’ is a triumph, and Both ‘Hot Water’ and ‘Furball ft Ally McMahon’ are just sensational. Cody Currie’s got it going on.

NIGHTSTEPPAZ – INSIDE THE WAREHOUSE (VIBE ME TO THE MOON)

New York Label, Vibe Me To The Moon, is headed up by Nightsteppaz, and here his is representing his own imprint with a killer track entitled ‘Inside The Warehouse’. It’s a deadly collaboration alongside the Sole Chanel legend that is Mr V.  Nightsteppaz invites some heavy remixers onboard to work their magic on the title cut including Demarkus Lewis, Franck Roger, and Montel all offering a radically different slide. With a cut for all scenarios, this EP is an unmissable tool for your DJ back bag.

SON OF SOUND: MAINSTREAM DREAM (DISTRICT 30)

A cross genre EP packed with underlying soul as Son of Sound drops four new original tracks on his own District 30 label. The Key and All I Need bring the house vibes with the former the pick of the EP for me with it’s percussion, layers of keys and samples elements coming together just as it should. T.Y.P. offer synth hooks, rhodes keys and disco beats and the downtempo title track of Mainstream Dream bring the hip-hop beats to the table and make this an all round decent release that deserves your ears.

SOUTHBOUND SOUNDS – EDUCATOR (DEEPER GROOVE RECORDINGS)

The Mike Huckaby tribute from the Irish duo who are well and truly on our radar. Three original tracks and a remix from John Daly make up the EP. Title track Educator is some quality deep house action with solid beats, synth stabs, atmoshpheric keys and chord hooks all align alongside samples of Huckaby’s voice which have been placed throughout. John Daly takes the original and very much retains the vibe of the original and cleverly reworks the parts to make this as good as the original. Two further gems in Keep It Movin and Sounds Upstairs make this a shoe in for our November picks.
