Review: Dam Swindle – Spice Run EP

They may have changed their name but it’s business as usual as Dam Swindle drop another quality EP.

Maartin and Lars release their first EP under their new guise on Aus Music. These two are never far from our words on LHM and this is simply down to the excellent music they continue to deliver. Whether via their own productions, their label Heist Recordings, through other projects like Sound Support or chatting with Dirt Crew and the pairs first ever release some years ago which catapulted them into the house spotlight (DIrt Crew Label Business coming over the next few days).

This three track EP offers everything you would expect from Dam Swindle, a host of live musicians which takes the compositions and sound to a unique area. The opener ‘Breathe’ has bags of soul assisted by the stunning vocals of Nikki O (check our piece on her brilliant new album here) and the live bass (from Dutch legend Charles Nagtazaam) provides a groove of squint and shake your head levels. Beautiful stuff.

Title track ‘Spice Run’ is a driving cut brought to life by Chris Bruining of Mauskovic Dance Band who works wonders on live percussion. Complex beats alongside simple key loops and bassline make this a high energy track that needs a dancefloor and fingers crossed it wont be too long before we are dancing to this amongst friends.

FInally ‘Get Together’ offers the funk with a killer bass line, gospel vocal samples and sensational jazz infused keys from Marcello Cassanelli which make this track my pick of the three. This is one for the dancers, play this loud and you will be out of your seat wherever you are!

It is tough to try and avoid gushing about this pair but why should I, the production, composition, musicianship and positivity are of the highest level. Everyone needs a bit of Dam Swindle in their lives.
