Horse Meat Disco resident and all round lovely fella, Severino is a DJ and artist of some class. Ahead of his visit at the next Hi-Definition on Friday 28 February, his newest residency, we had a chance to sit down and throw a few questions at him, all for your pleasure!

LondonHouseMusic – So Seve we first remember you from the mid-late 90’s around various record shops in Soho. Tell us about your early days in London and what drew you here from your native Italy?

Severino – I moved here in February 1997, because i always loved this city, full of record shops, clubs, music lovers, something I needed in my life. I had a job at Italian record shop Disco Inn as a promo buyer. Every day i was going shopping and hassling record labels and distributors to give me promo vinyls. I’m glad i moved here.

LHM – Were your first DJ gigs in Italy or London? Tell us about your first experiences behind the decks and some DJs that you admired/influenced you in those early days.

S – I always want to be a DJ i guess since i was 7 years old, practising every day. I had my first gig at my local disco when i was 16. In London i remember few bars but possibly my favourite was Cocomo bar in Shoreditch where we started a party with mates Rob Wood (Jockey Slut), Michael Morley and Mark James. They were great fun, a party called HAPPY FAMILY.

LHM – How did you meet Jim and James, who set up the now legendary Horse Meat Disco where you are a resident. Please tell us about the early days of HMD.

S – I met James ages ago in Italy when he used to be an intern at IRMA Recs and Jim at Sleaze Nation magazine. They were sharing office with Jockey Slut. He gave me the opportunity to play at gay club Crash which ended up becoming an amazing residency for me. And of course being a resident for 10 years at HMD has been incredible too!

LHM – HMD now has residencies in Berlin, New York and Lisbon, tell us about those and how you think London compares with those?

S – It’s soo good to be able to travel and everywhere is been amazing. New York is different and great because of the disco influence that always been HUGE in New York and clubs like Paradise garage, a club that is an inspiration to HMD. Berln is something special because of a strong gay scene.

LHM – Tell us about your producing / remixing career as seem to be more and more coming recently.

S – Its been fun doing remixes for incredible labals like Classic (including a compilation), Hot Creation, Get Up and more. I’ve a few projects too with great friends like Nico De Ceglia as HYENA STOMP and HiFi Sean as UP YOURS. Planning more collaboration with other friends and of course by myself too.

LHM – And Hi-Definition your new monthly residency at the stunning basement, please give us some more info on the party and venue.

S – I was introduced to the basement from mate Seb. Its an amazing venue with an incredible soundsystem and warm vibe. Everybody who came to the launch in January loved it, also I think because of the intimate nature, it is under 300 capacity. It’s a great residency for me and an honour to be part of the team with Stuart Patterson and Tim Keenoy, two people who certainly know their music and have been in the club scene in London for long time. Great to be doing something central and for Free too, how often do you hear that!

LHM – What other plans do you have for the forthcoming year?

S – As i said more music, a 4th compilation with HMD boys, lots of travels and hopefully Hi Defintion getting stronger!

The nGuest listext Hi-Definition takes place from 9pm – 2.30am, Friday 28 February in the Basement at the Edition Hotel, with DJs Severino, Stuart Patterson and Tim Keenoy. Entry is FREE but only on the guest list.
