Ear To The Ground: Jimpster – Birdhouse LP

Hearing about Jimpster working on a new album during lockdown was something pretty exciting. We knew the album was going to be a different sound to what we know and love about Jimpster and of course Freerange, but never for a moment was there any concern that the resulting LP wasn’t going to be something pretty special. I love being right!

Birdhouse is Jimpster’s seventh LP and, as the album notes highlight, he “revisit[s] his early inspirations of jazz, 70’s fusion, library music, ambient and sample-based downtempo electronica”. What makes it so special is the warmth in the production, the stunning vocal and musician collaborations and the fact it is packed with underlying soul, making this one shit hot piece of work!

Dissecting the album is futile. I don’t have the clarity in my writing skills to be able to get across my thoughts, and to be honest, music sometimes just has to speak for itself. The LP is something that needs to be listened to in its entirety, get the full impact of what has been created. Anyone who buys one or two of the tracks (I won’t abuse like I have before on this site) is missing out on the whole experience. However, I will happily pick out my personal favourite, ‘Voodoo’ featuring the magical words of Yoh. Just beautiful, so much groove, flow and soul. Currently on repeat!
